Overview

Tsinghua University was established in 1911, originally under the name “Tsing Hua Imperial College”. The school was renamed "Tsing Hua College" in 1912. The university section was founded in 1925. The name “National Tsing Hua University” was adopted in 1928.

The faculty greatly valued the interaction between Chinese and Western cultures, the sciences and humanities, the ancient and modern. Tsinghua scholars Wang Guowei, Liang Qichao, Chen Yinque and Zhao Yuanren, renowned as the "Four Tutors" in the Institute of Chinese Classics, advocated this belief and had a profound impact on Tsinghua's later development.

Since China opened up to the world in 1978, Tsinghua University has developed at a breathtaking pace into a comprehensive research university. At present, the university has 22 schools and 59 departments with faculties in science, engineering, humanities, law, medicine, history, philosophy, economics, management, education and art.

Tsinghua is home to a remarkably diverse community. In 2019, more than 4,000 international students from over 130 countries were enrolled, including more than 3,200 degree students and over 700 non-degree students. Worldwide, more than 30,000 Tsinghua international alumni make significant contributions to social, scientific, economic, and sustainable development.

Our international connections are built upon a strong belief in cooperation and collaboration. Tsinghua has partnerships with over 290 universities and institutes worldwide and has established over 100 exchange programs and 50 dual and double degree programs with world-renowned institutions. In 2019, more than 8,800 international scholars from 130 countries visited Tsinghua, more than 200 international conferences were held on campus, and more than 16,500 students and faculty members went abroad for various programs.

Tsinghua’s diversity of student population is reflected in its diversity of programs! 20 schools and 59 departments cover disciplines in science, engineering, literature, art, history, philosophy, economics, management, law, education, and medicine. International students can choose from more than 60 undergraduate programs, 100 master’s programs, and 90 doctoral programs, among which 21 master’s programs and 8 doctoral programs are delivered fully in English. More than 500 courses in English are available to students across the university.

At Tsinghua, we encourage every student to embrace the world. Through the Center for Global Competency Development, Tsinghua prepares its students with ‘global competence’ – the capability to learn, work and live with others from different cultural backgrounds to embrace opportunities and challenges in the future. Tsinghua has a focus on creating programs that blend global leadership development with a strong foundation in interdisciplinary thinking, including the renowned Schwarzman Scholars program, the GIX (Global Innovation eXchange) program, and programs at the Tsinghua SIGS (Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School). The ISSC staff foster an environment in which every international student and scholar can thrive by ensuring that the international community is strongly supported and well represented at Tsinghua. The Center is a hub of information and resources for the international community, providing help and guidance on immigration and visas, residency, university services, campus life and cultural activities.

Application Prerequisites

Nationality
Non-Chinese citizens holding foreign passports. Requirements of the regulations set in the Document No. 12 (2020) of the Ministry of Education of the PRC should be met.
Healthy Status
Physically and mentally healthy and in good moral character.
Education Background
Have a high school diploma or above for Non-Degree and Bachelor's Degree programs, a Bachelor's for postgraduate programs, with a satisfactory academic record.
Language Proficiency
HSK4 with scores 180 or above for Chinese medium programs, TOEFL (>= 80), IELTS (>= 5.5), and or other certificates of the same proficiency level for English medium programs.
Supporting Documents
Other supporting materials that can prove learning ability and comprehensive quality, such as award certificates, scientific and technological achievements, publications, participation in activities, etc.

Accommodation

International Student Apartments of Tsinghua University was established in 2004. It is located in the northeast corner of the campus, close to the northeast gate of the university (Zijing Gate). The on-campus apartments include Zijing Student Apartment Buildings No. 19-23 and Student Apartment Building No.6 (Asian Youth Center). The International Student Apartment provides three types of dormitories: double room (two beds in one room, shared bathroom on each floor), triple room (three beds in one room, shared bathroom on each floor), AB room (independent bedroom and two persons shared bathroom). In-room facilities mainly include air conditioning, Internet, bedding and furniture. Public area facilities mainly include washing machines, dryers, study rooms, light sports spaces, etc.
