Chinese Language Study

The Chinese Language Program at Xi’an Jiaotong University is designed to build a solid foundation in Chinese language and communication skills for international students. The curriculum incorporates Chinese culture into language teaching, fostering students’ intercultural competence. It also aims to enhance students’ performance on the HSK examination.

The course consists of 18-22 contact hours per week.

1. Core Course：Comprehensive Chinese, Chinese Listening & Speaking, Chinese Reading & Writing and HSK Tutorial.

2. Elective Course: Chinese Character Writing, Chinese Orthography, Calligraphy, Chinese Painting, Paper-Cutting Art, Tai Ji, Business Chinese, Chinese Poetry, Ancient Literature, Modern and Contemporary Literature, Modern Chinese Linguistics, History and Development of Chinese Characters, Appreciation of Film and Television, and Selection of Idioms, etc.

3. Chinese Language & Cultural Immersion Activities and Diversified Competitive Events.

●Program Level

To accurately assess the Chinese language proficiency of international students, the School of International Education will administer a placement test prior to the start of classes. Based on the test results, students will be placed in classes that match their proficiency levels. The Chinese language courses are categorized into three levels: elementary, intermediate, and advanced. International students with outstanding Chinese language proficiency may be eligible to enroll in undergraduate-level courses offered by the Chinese Language and Literature program.

● Textbooks: Easy Learning Chinese‌ , Developing Chinese (the 3rd edition), HSK Standard Course, Understanding Contemporary China, self-compiled textbooks and handouts.

● Assessment: Student performance will be assessed through written and oral examinations, coursework, and class participation. The final grade is composed of approximately 50% continuous assessment, 40% final examination, and 10% attendance and classroom performance.
